Is It True? Questioning the Stories, Assumptions, and Beliefs That Shape Our Lives
How often do we mistake our interpretations for reality?
See blog post: https://marielsomatictherapy.com/hold-it-up-to-the-light-a-simple-practice-for-questioning-the-stories-we-tell-ourselves/
A friend doesn’t return a text. A conversation feels awkward. A plan falls apart. Within moments, our minds begin weaving stories, drawing conclusions, and making assumptions. Some of those stories serve us well. Others quietly limit our freedom, our relationships, and our sense of what’s possible. What if we learned to hold those stories gently up to the light and ask a simple question: Is it true?
Join us for an engaging and highly experiential evening of self-discovery as we explore the powerful role that thoughts, assumptions, and beliefs play in shaping our experience. Through a series of individual reflections, paired conversations, small-group exercises, and full-group sharing, we’ll examine some of the stories we tell ourselves and discover practical ways to question them.
Drawing inspiration from cognitive behavioural techniques, mindfulness, self-inquiry practices, and decades of personal growth work, this evening is designed to be practical, accessible, and immediately useful. Rather than focusing on theory, we’ll learn by doing.
Together we’ll explore questions such as:
• How do our assumptions influence what we notice and how we respond?
• What happens when we challenge a long-held belief?
• How can we distinguish between facts and the stories we create about them?
• What new possibilities become available when we loosen our grip on certainty?
You may leave with greater clarity, fresh perspectives on familiar challenges, and a simple process you can continue using long after the evening ends.
No previous experience is required. Just bring your curiosity.
