SUMMARY:Emergency Preparedness: When Systems Fail\, What Remains?
DESCRIPTION:If the power went out tomorrow… how long before things got uncomfortable? \nMost people wouldn’t make it 72 hours. \nNot just because the lights go out. \nBut because without power… \nYou likely don’t have water. \nYou can’t flush a toilet. \nYou can’t cook—unless you have a gas stove or BBQ. \nMost people don’t have even a few days of food on hand that can be prepared without power. \nIt’s not dramatic. \nIt’s practical. \nAnd most people haven’t really thought it through. \nWe’ve already seen glimpses: \nThe 2003 blackout across the eastern grid. \nNetwork outages that shut down payments. \nMoments where shelves emptied faster than expected. \nAnd now—with rising global tensions and increasing pressure on fuel and infrastructure—it’s not unrealistic to imagine disruptions that last longer and hit harder. \nI’ve lived through this in real time. \nHosting groups during power outages\, having to think carefully about every decision— \nWhen to open the fridge. \nHow to preserve food. \nHow to keep people calm\, fed\, and comfortable when the usual systems weren’t available. \nIt changes how you think. \nOn Wednesday\, May 6\, we’re opening a grounded\, honest conversation about emergency preparedness and resilience—not from fear\, but from awareness\, curiosity\, and community. \nWe’ll explore real scenarios: \n\nExtended power outages and what they actually mean day-to-day\nLoss of water\, sanitation\, and cooking capacity\nCommunication and payment systems going down\nFuel cost spikes and how they ripple into food and daily life\nSupply chain disruptions and what happens in the first few days\n\nAnd we’ll ask better questions: \n\nWhat skills do I have that would actually be useful?\nWhat am I missing that others might have?\nWhat simple steps could make me significantly more prepared?\nWho do I trust—and who could trust me?\n\nBecause one thing becomes clear very quickly: \nResilience is not an individual project. \nIt’s a community capacity. \nKrishnadeva will guide the evening using a process rooted in Quaker consensus practice—a method refined over more than 350 years to help groups think clearly\, listen deeply\, and arrive at shared understanding. \nThis isn’t a lecture. \nIt’s a space to become more aware\, slightly unsettled in the right way… \n…and ultimately more grounded and empowered together. \nYou don’t need to become a “prepper.” \nBut you might want to become a little more prepared. \n⸻ \nWonderful Wednesday Gathering \nEmergency Preparedness Circle \n📅 Wednesday\, May 6 \n🕡 Potluck at 6:30 pm (bring a healthy dish to share) \n🕢 Circle from 7:30 – 9:30 pm \n📍 South Etobicoke loft (details upon RSVP) \n💛 By donation \n⸻
